Sitting by the ocean

Moving house sucks!

We've just moved the family and home of ten and a half years up north to gorgeous Mangawhai. The entire experience was a lesson in keeping your eye on the endgame - having a clear goal and watching that while the details keep biting you in the rear. I hope I never have to do that again (which is all a bit rich as we will be doing it again in a year when we have our new house built).

Still, we're here and I've been gradually ramping up my speed at work and discovering how much working makes me feel better (I think that's called workaholism). It's a worry but it's what I've been holding on to during the chaos.

I've even had a quick look at the news today and have to say I'm disappointed at the number of examples of overseas companies feeling that they've bled us New Zealanders as dry as they can and now it might be time to move on to more lush pastures.

It's been great having Vodafone in New Zealand giving the mighty Telecom a run for it's money in the mobile market place. Yet now it seems we're not bleeding fast enough for them. Read more here.

There have also been a number of other instances of companies with overseas owners closing up and leaving the workers with no redundancy or jobs.

It's a worry to all of us particularly to smaller population areas that are dependent on just a few employers.

In some ways there are parallels here in Mangawhai. It's a booming area. With over 800 plots of land for sale and houses popping up like mushrooms the tradespeople are loving it. But I worry about what happens when the development slows down. There's little in the way of strategic economic planning to create new business opportunities once the building boom dries up.

I've been told that 70% of the rating income for the Kaipara district comes from Mangawhai (all those rich Aucklanders paying top dollar rates for their million dollar views). But yet apparently only 30% of the rates get spent on this area.

Admittedly it's likely that the building boom will continue for several more years but I'm pretty sure that now would be the time to start thinking about what next.

How about it Kaipara Council? Are you up for the challenge?
